A Bit Of Trivia:
Flea Markets, where second hand goods can be had at cheap prices are not just an American phenomenon. In fact, the word “flea market” has it’s origins in the name of a famous Parisian street market. The “Marche aux puces Saint-Quen” is a colorful market on the northern border of Paris that has been operating for more than a century. Marche aux puces literally translates to “flea market”. This market was called ‘flea market’ because so many second hand items were sold there it was believed they would gather fleas. The term “flea market” was coined in 1922 by George Dougherty and gained popularity around 1950 here in America.
Flea Markets became a fun and popular place for people to find bargains, useful items and collectibles here in America in the 1960's
